There’s something special about trails shared by hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
Multi use trails let everyone enjoy nature their own way. Watching everyone have an
experience side by side is what makes shared trails so special.
First-time users on a multi use trail should expect to share the space with hikers,
cyclists, and sometimes horseback riders, all moving at different speeds. It’s normal to
hear bikes approaching from behind or see horses coming around corners, so staying
alert and aware of your surroundings is important. With a little patience, clear
communication, and respect for trail etiquette, multi use trails offer a welcoming and
enjoyable experience for everyone.
Unsure how to navigate a multi use trail? When using a multi use trail, stay to the right
and pass on the left with a clear warning like “on your left.” Cyclists should yield to
hikers, and everyone should yield to people with mobility aids, and horses. Follow
posted signs, adjust your speed to keep everyone safe, and stay alert near blind
corners or busy areas.
Ferretti Non-Motorized Trail System is a great example of multi use trails. Groveland
Trail Heads has been helping develop and maintain trails so that hikers, bikers, and
horseback riders can all enjoy them safely. Right now, we’re building up to 20 miles of
multi use trails, including 13 miles of new loops designed for beginners, intermediates,
and advanced users. Some trails are mountain bike only, while many others are open to
all users. We’re also restoring older trails to keep them in great shape and ensure the
land stays healthy for years to come. Spread across more than 500 acres, these trails
are open year round, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see so many different people
enjoying the space we care for. Head over to https://www.grovelandtrailheads.org/ to
check out the trail maps. Keep an eye out on socials for group rides and events, all
levels are welcome.
